This dress is designed based on a personal friend of mine. Her memories of the perfect child hood home have been transformed into a dress, made for her future, inspired by her past.

Purpose:
The purpose of my work is to create a sense of home in everyday life. It is the use of memory as inspiration to preserve or illuminate the idea of “home”. The goal is to create a pattern to apply to determined object or place to stimulate and preserve memory and sense of home.
The purpose of using pattern is to illustrate the idea of emphasis or to stress it’s significance in the life of the person.
Process:
My process is to use memory as a tool to look into a person’s identity. Each person is interviewed by taking a survey.
The answers to these questions are interpreted by me. This allows me to understand a person’s point of view and to really get a sense of what this person sees as home.
All angles of the process are determined by the interviewed. This includes, the color (based on description), pattern (based on age when memory occurred), pattern motif (based on memory), complicatedness of pattern (based on how complicated the memory), and the final resting place of object (determined by how this memory effects the everyday life of the person).

Moving on to my peers, this pattern was made for my roommate Maria. She is part of my home in Cleveland Ohio. Her memory is an escape from real life. It is an imaginary land, the place in which she retreats at sign of danger. This pattern is a design for the inside of a suit case for her to take on her “escapes”.

This image is a collaboration of my Grandmother and I’s memories. It is a blend of how I remember her kitchen, as well as her stated “home”. Traditionally, inside a vernacular home, the kitchen is considered the center of community. I feel that this is the reason I felt so strongly about being there.

Spending time talking with my mother has given me an insight into her past. She described to me that her favorite memory of home was with her grandmother as well. This was located in Florida, where she would pick tangerines from the trees.
